If you want to watch an artist fully immersed in their practice, watch May Ann wheel throw. Its meditative, contemplative, even therapeutic. This same patience also shows up when she is teaching her students, the lucky few who are able to get a spot.
But in that same breath, she can flip a switch and become this bubbly firecracker, bursting with creative expression and spontaneous humour, often accompanied by her unmistakable laugh.
The fact that May Ann is able to travel between these two spaces, from methodical entrepreneurism, to an imaginative world full of curiosity and abstract thought, demonstrates why she has such a truly enviable skill set.
If Instagrams algorithm wasn’t so flawed, May Ann would have 100k more followers.

My time at Studio Fundamentals was phenomenal - and I don't use that term lightly. When we started Beginners Wheel-Throwing, a friend and I were extremely burnt out by the state of the world. We were looking for a space that could hold everything we were feeling while creating some pieces to carry along with us.
Not only was May Ann able to curate this space, but she did so with such attentiveness that we came out of the class flourishing and confident in our work.
We asked for direction over and over (and I never quite got past the beginning stages of wheel-throwing) but we laughed, held space for each other, got covered in clay and learned so much. May Ann even threw a birthday celebration for me during one of the classes! With community-care at the forefront, May created an intentional and authentic learning experience for us. If I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.
Studio Fundamentals is easily the best pottery studio in Vancouver!

My mom, sister and I did beginner wheel classes with May last spring as our Christmas presents and it was such a fun way to spend time together. We all had different levels of experience with clay but since it was a small group we got all the 1 on 1 instruction we needed, May Ann has a sixth sense for knowing exactly how to help you improve! As I already had a good base knowledge she really helped me to fine tune my skills but most importantly for me she was easygoing and fun to be around and really made my mom and sister feel welcome. We love you May Ann! If your thinking clay, don’t be cray GO TO MAY!

May-Ann's wheel-throwing class was recommended to me and I'm so glad I signed up! She managed to be patient, articulate, and entertaining - a package of traits that can be difficult to find in a teacher. If you start to mess up your work, she knows how to fix it due to her extensive knowledge. Taking her class brings joy to my week. She plays great music and each session flies by because you feel so present in her studio/classroom.

It’s been AMAZING learning wheel throwing from May Ann. She is truly an expert of the craft and a phenomenal instructor with superb energy. She did a great job at finding problems with my technique and more importantly providing solutions to fix the issues. On a side note, her speakers are always playing BANGERS, so I promise you, every session is a great session. I cannot wait to take more classes!

May Ann teaches my 6 yr. old daughter to play with clay and we couldn't be happier. They get along like best friends. May Ann is fun and silly, while still being technical and teachery. She cares deeply about teaching competency and instilling confidence in her students. It's not just about cups and bowls to her, it's about making a loving community.
